About: Our Teaching Rhythm

Picnic Harmonic Bzz is an independent collection of free lesson notes for people who play acoustic music for pleasure, not for a stage. We write for the friend with the guitar at the barbecue, the couple who sing together on camping trips, the family that wants one song everyone knows.

What we believe about learning

  • Playable before impressive

Every arrangement should work with open chords and a capo. If a part needs a session player, it doesn't belong here.

  • Comfortable before high

We teach you to choose keys for your voice, so singing feels like conversation rather than effort.

  • Considerate before loud

Outdoor music happens in shared space. Good manners are part of good musicianship.

  • Small steps, repeated

Each lesson ends with a short practice sequence you can finish in ten minutes.

How the lessons are written

Lessons draw on widely taught, well-documented ideas: the Nashville Number System for describing chords, the major pentatonic scale for melody, and parallel thirds and sixths for harmony. Where we mention musicians, books or traditions, such as the Carter Family, Merle Travis, Sacred Harp singing or Pat Pattison's Writing Better Lyrics, it is to point you to further listening and reading, not to imply any connection.

Photographs in the lessons illustrate settings and techniques. The 3D renders show instruments and equipment on plain backgrounds. Neither depicts our writers, and we do not present tutor profiles or credentials we cannot support.

What we don't offer

There are no paid courses, no enrolment, no certificates and no accreditation. Everything on the site is free to read. If you want formal training, a local music teacher or an accredited exam board is the right next step.
